Amplifying Afro-Latinx Voices
Honoring our roots and emerging together.
Dear Amplifier,
For the third year in a row, Amplify Latinx is honored to highlight Afro-Latinx voices and elevate the complexities and diversity of the Latino experience in celebration of Black History Month. Our theme for this year's Black History Month is "The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity," which focuses on exploring how black families in this country have been "reverenced, stereotyped, and vilified" from the days of slavery to our own time.
We are shedding light on the critical intersections of race, ethnicity, and culture in Afro-Latinx Diasporas and across Latin America through this visibility series.
We open the series by learning about our roots and history by proudly spotlighting eight Afro-Latinx historical figures who, through their leadership, tenacity and courage, changed narratives, opened doors, and elevated the voices of Afro-Latinx across Latin America and the US. Then, we continue to today's Afro-Latinx experiences through the voices of six Amplifiers embracing their identity and asserting their belonging in the Latino community.
Let's celebrate Black History Month by taking actions to be antiracists; it starts by creating spaces where we can collectively learn, heal, build and lift each other.
